Creative Writing Course

This course will help students develop their creative and fiction writing skills. Through lectures, group workshops, and one-on-one instructor sessions, students will explore advanced poetry and short stories styles, and analyze creative writing elements for understanding and application. Students will be introduced to different genres of fiction, focus on descriptive writing, narration, and developing characters. They will analyze the elements of different styles of global poetry, and write their own versions.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Create an original short story
  • Write original poetry in several styles
  • Develop creative writing skills in narration, descriptive writing, and genre writing
  • Analyze poetry and short fiction for understanding
  • Draft and make significant revisions to their own work
  • Provide revision feedback to classmates
  • Understand different global styles of poetry
  • Identify poetic devices

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • An original 250-500 word short story
  • A poem or collection of poems of 200 words
  • A 200-word analysis of their work
  • Four literary reflections of poetry and short fiction
  • Four writing development plans
  • Good preparation for TOEFL and other standardized tests
  • Satisfies criteria for Knovva Academic Standards, based on IB, PISA, Cambridge, and Common Core standards
  • A Certificate of Completion from Knovva Academy and corresponding transcript

Morgan is a world class scholar who currently teaches English at the eminent Smith College, where her students are geared towards multilingual students. She is a prolific novelist and playwright whose plays have been produced in New York, London, California and Iowa. After earning her BFA at New York University and MFA at the University of Iowa, Morgan started her teaching career in the Peace Corps in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.
