Bennington College Young Writer Competition

This 10-hour one-on-one intensive will explore creative writing with the goal of creating a polished piece for submission to the Bennington College Young Writers Awards. Through lectures, readings, writing prompts, and discussions with the instructor, students will examine poetry writing, and analyze writing elements for understanding and application. Students will be introduced to different types of writings, and write their own versions.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • “>Create original poems, story or essay in different writing styles
  • Develop writing skills in diction, imagery, symbolist and stricture
  • Draft and make significant revisions to their own work

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • “>A clear understanding of what types of pieces have won in previous years
  • A plan for submitting their work to the specified contest
  • Good preparation for TOEFL and other standardized tests
  • Satisfies criteria for Knovva Academic Standards, based on IB, PISA, Cambridge, and Common Core standards
  • A Certificate of Completion from Knovva Academy and corresponding transcript

Morgan is a world class scholar who currently teaches English at the eminent Smith College, where her students are geared towards multilingual students. She is a prolific novelist and playwright whose plays have been produced in New York, London, California and Iowa. After earning her BFA at New York University and MFA at the University of Iowa, Morgan started her teaching career in the Peace Corps in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.

Dr. Hernandez has been in secondary education for more than 20 years as an English and AP Art History teacher, Gifted Coordinator, and Curriculum Specialist. She holds a PhD in Media, Art and Text from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) a Master’s in Teaching English and a Bachelors in English from VCU, and teaching certifications in Visual Arts PreK-12, English, and Gifted Education.
